What is acerola?

Acerola is a small tree on which grows a delicious cherry-like fruit, often called Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry. Belonging to the Malpighia family, the scientific designation of this tropical fruit is Malpighia emarginata , Malpighia glabra or Malpighia punicifolia .

Native to tropical areas of Mexico, South America and Central America, this small tangy red fruit has been appreciated for thousands of years by traditional medicine, and now by modern medicine.

Acerola is nowadays widely exported across the world and is also grown in parts of the Indian subcontinent as well as in warm southern regions of the United States.

What is the composition of acerola?

The composition of acerola is quite atypical:

What are the benefits of acerola?

Due to its richness in nutrients, acerola is consumed throughout the world for its many toning and protective properties promoting physical and mental well-being.

It strengthens the immune defenses

Acerola, concentrated in natural vitamin C, contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system . It therefore helps prevent certain ailments, which makes it an ally of choice, particularly during seasonal changes when the body's natural defenses can be weakened.

It reduces fatigue and boosts tone

Acerola helps provide tone and vitality to the body. It is therefore of great help in the event of temporary fatigue.

After exercise, acerola facilitates muscle recovery . For this reason, it is recommended for athletes.

It fights oxidative stress

The cells of our body are constantly subject to attack by free radicals, mainly coming from ultraviolet rays produced by the sun or pollution. This is called oxidative stress . This phenomenon is notably at the origin of the skin aging process.

Thanks to the antioxidant effects of the vitamin C it contains, acerola helps protect cells against free radicals .

It promotes skin health

The vitamin C present in acerola encourages the synthesis of collagen , an essential protein to promote hydration, elasticity and resistance of the skin .

How to choose the right acerola food supplement?

Even if it contains less vitamin C than synthetic vitamin C in powder or capsules, acerola remains an excellent food supplement to supplement with natural vitamin C.

Commercially, acerola is generally available in two forms: powder or chewable tablets . So which one to take and how to choose it?

Our preference is tablets! Already pre-dosed, they are easy and pleasant to consume, and can be given to children without problem.

For the choice of these tablets, here are some tips:

  • Monitor the origin of the acerola. Ideally, select an acerola from Brazil, a country really suitable for its production.

  • Opt for an organic product. To do this, look at the Organic Agriculture certifications on the product page.

  • Check the vitamin C content. This is usually around 17%. If a supplement contains more than 20% natural vitamin C, it is because it has undergone the addition of synthetic vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid); if this is the case, then turn to a supplement containing 100% L-ascorbic acid!

  • Make sure there is no sugar in the composition. A supplement should only provide benefits, and sugar intake is not one of them!

Acerola dosage and instructions for use

To date, there is no universal dosage for this product. Its dosage depends on each person, in particular on the needs and age of each person. To find out the appropriate dosage, do not hesitate to ask your doctor.

Acerola: contraindications

As it can increase uric acid levels, acerola is not suitable for people with gout. Its consumption is also not suggested for people who may suffer from kidney stones.

As far as the side effects of this product are concerned, no studies have mentioned them to date. However, excessive consumption of acerola can cause discomfort such as nausea or diarrhea. If in doubt, it is better to speak with your doctor before starting an acerola treatment.
