Introduction to Iron Bisglycinate

Iron is an essential trace element for the body. Vital for overall health, it contributes to reducing fatigue, supporting the normal function of the immune system, and producing red blood cells.

Since it is not synthesized by the body, it must be provided daily through diet or supplementation to prevent deficiency, particularly for women during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or periods of heavy menstrual bleeding (as iron requirements are increased).

To best meet your iron needs, our supplement is formulated with an amino-chelated form of highly assimilable iron offering excellent digestive tolerance: Ferrochel® quality iron bisglycinate.

Our Iron Bisglycinate contains 90 capsules, providing a 3-month supply.

What is iron bisglycinate?

Iron bisglycinate is iron bound to two glycine molecules, an amino acid. This is known as "chelated" iron: the mineral is no longer free, it is protected. This complex is ionically neutral, meaning it carries no electrical charge. In practice, it passes through the intestinal wall without irritating it and without competing with other minerals from your meal, whereas traditional iron salts release free ions that irritate the mucosa.

Why does this mineral matter so much? Because the body cannot produce iron. It obtains it solely through diet or supplementation, utilizing it every day: iron contributes to reducing fatigue, the normal function of the immune system, the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, and normal oxygen transport in the body.

That is why we developed Ferrochel® premium iron bisglycinate, combined with 100 mg of Quali®-C Vitamin C to enhance its absorption. One capsule provides 14 mg of iron, delivering 100% of the nutrient reference values. The bottle contains 90 capsules: enough for an uninterrupted 3-month supply.

Who is iron bisglycinate for?

Iron bisglycinate is not meant for everyone, and that is good news: we can identify exactly who benefits from it.

  • You experience heavy periods. Menstrual blood loss is the primary cause of increased iron needs in women of childbearing age.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Requirements increase after the first trimester, and supplementation should always be decided with a healthcare professional.
  • You follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. Plant-based iron, known as non-heme iron, is less readily absorbed than iron from animal products.
  • You engage in high-intensity endurance sports. Running, trail running, triathlon: regular intensive training increases both iron loss and requirements.
  • You experience persistent fatigue despite adequate sleep and rest.

Please note: only a blood test (ferritin, hemoglobin) can determine your iron status. Request one from your doctor rather than supplementing blindly.

And if you are building a broader wellness routine, iron bisglycinate pairs naturally with our immunity supplements.

Ingredients

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) Quali®-C, iron bisglycinate Ferrochel®, rice starch, vegetable capsule (coating agent: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose).

Directions for use

Directions: take 1 capsule per day with a large glass of water. Each capsule provides 14 mg of iron (100% of the nutrient reference values) and 100 mg of Quali®-C Vitamin C.

When to take: preferably in the morning on an empty stomach, when iron bisglycinate absorption is at its peak. In case of digestive discomfort, take it with breakfast instead. Separate by at least 2 hours from zinc or calcium intake, and keep away from tea and coffee consumption.

Duration: a bottle of 90 capsules covers a 3-month supply of iron bisglycinate, the recommended duration. Consult your doctor and get a follow-up blood test before renewing.

Target audience: suitable for adults and adolescents aged 14 and over. Under 14, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding, seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Long-term supply tip: subscribe and save 10% on every order, with no commitment.

Precautions for use

Not recommended for individuals suffering from diseases that result in abnormal iron accumulation (hemochromatosis, polycythemia...).

Does not substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach of young children. Store in a dry place, away from heat and light. If you are on medication, please consult your healthcare provider.

Why choose our Iron Bisglycinate?

Iron is one of the most problematic micronutrients to supplement. Not because it is ineffective quite the opposite but because traditional forms (iron sulfate, gluconate) are poorly absorbed and poorly tolerated, often causing constipation, heartburn, and nausea. The Ferrochel® iron we selected for our formula is a game changer: as a chelated iron bound to two glycine molecules, it offers high bioavailability and excellent digestive tolerance.

Fer bisglycinate novoma

Ferrochel® : highly assimilable chelated iron

Iron that goes unnoticed is iron you actually finish taking. Ferrochel® iron bisglycinate, developed by the American laboratory Albion® Minerals, is produced using a patented process that binds each iron atom to two molecules of glycine (an amino acid). This chelation makes the complex ionically neutral, meaning it does not irritate the digestive mucosa or interfere with the absorption of other nutrients. The ideal form to choose if you are prone to constipation, nausea, or heartburn with conventional iron supplements.

Ferrochel®: a form of iron backed by research

Iron bisglycinate is currently one of the most extensively studied forms of iron. A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials published in 2023 reported better digestive tolerance compared to conventional iron salts, as well as a more marked increase in hemoglobin levels in pregnant women. Important clarification: these studies focus on the ingredient iron bisglycinate itself, not on our finished product, and are separate from the Novoma consumer test presented above.

Enriched with Quali®-C Vitamin C for better absorption

We combined 100 mg of Quali®-C branded Vitamin C with Ferrochel® iron. Vitamin C enhances intestinal iron absorption, especially when consumed alongside plant-based iron-rich foods. Furthermore, it contributes to reducing fatigue and supporting the normal function of the immune system, working in perfect synergy with iron.

Additive-free, gluten-free, vegan-friendly

A clean formula you can take for three months without compromise : GMO-free, gluten-free, and free of unnecessary additives or excipients. With iron bisglycinate of non-animal origin and a plant-based capsule, this chelated iron is fully suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Iron supplementation only makes sense if it is effectively absorbed and well tolerated over time. We chose Ferrochel® by Albion® Minerals, a glycine-chelated iron that is ionically neutral and gentle on the digestive mucosa—a critical point given that traditional iron salts often cause nausea and constipation.

Our answers to your questions

What foods contain iron?

Iron is found in a wide variety of foods, both animal-based (meat, fish, seafood) and plant-based (legumes, green vegetables, dried fruit, spices, etc.). Among plant-based sources, lentils, kidney beans, tofu, pumpkin seeds, and cocoa are particularly good, especially when combined with a food rich in vitamin C, which increases iron absorption. For more information, see our complete list of foods rich in iron.

What are the differences between heme iron and non-heme iron?

These are the two forms of iron in our diet. Heme iron is of animal origin; its absorption is around 15-20%. Non-heme iron is of plant origin; it is only absorbed at a rate of 3-5%. A varied diet including both remains ideal. Note : iron bisglycinate is a non-heme iron whose absorption is not very sensitive to dietary inhibitors(phytates, tannins), which makes it suitable for vegetarian diets.

What are the risks of iron overdose?

Iron is essential, but it can become toxic in large quantities: excessive intake can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. One capsule already provides 100% of the reference intake: do not exceed the recommended daily dose, and do not take iron "just in case," without a blood test. Consult a doctor if signs of overdose appear. To learn more : too much iron in the blood: causes, signs, and solutions.

Is iron bisglycinate suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes. Iron bisglycinate is of non-animal originand the capsule is plant-based (HPMC): no animal ingredients in the formula. This chelated iron is even particularly interesting for these diets, where dietary iron is exclusively non-heme, and therefore less well absorbed. To learn more: iron bisglycinate: its effects and benefits.

When should you take iron bisglycinate?

A bisglycinate iron supplement is intended for people with increased needs: heavy periods, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a vegetarian or vegan diet, or intensive endurance sports. In all cases, a blood test precedes the course: iron should not be taken without an identified need. It is not recommended in cases of abnormal iron accumulation (hemochromatosis, polycythemia) and is not intended for children under 14; if you are taking medication, consult your doctor. Digestive discomfort is still possible, although it is rare with this form.

What time of day should I take iron bisglycinate?

In the morning on an empty stomach, with a large glass of water: that’s when iron bisglycinate is best absorbed. If your stomach is sensitive, take it at breakfast: one capsule taken is better than one forgotten. Avoid tea, coffee, and dairy around the time you take it: wait 1 to 2 hours. And aim for consistency, at the same time every day.

How long does a course of iron bisglycinate last?

A bottle of 90 capsules provides a 3-month supply of iron bisglycinate, at a rate of one capsule per day. This is the duration we recommend: stores are slowly replenished, and completing the course is more effective than increasing the dosage. After that, a blood test and your doctor’s advice will determine whether to renew the treatment.

Can bisglycinate iron be taken with other supplements?

Yes, provided you follow a few guidelines. Space out the intake of zinc and calcium by at least 2 hours: these minerals compete with bisglycinate iron for absorption. The same logic applies to tea and coffee, whose tannins hinder absorption. Vitamin C and vitamin B12 remain suitable combinations, but simply reduce the dose if you are already taking vitamin C, since each bisglycinate iron capsule provides 100 mg.

How to recognize an iron deficiency?

Certain situations increase requirements: heavy periods, pregnancy, plant-based diets, intense exercise. The most commonly reported sign is then fatigue that persists despite sufficient rest. But fatigue has many causes, and no single sign is conclusive: only a blood test (ferritin, hemoglobin) confirms an iron deficiency. Talk to your doctor before starting a course of iron bisglycinate.

Is anemia always caused by an iron deficiency?

Anemia is characterized by an abnormally low level of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the organs. Although this is often the case, anemia does not necessarily mean anemia due to a lack of iron (= iron deficiency anemia): it can also be caused by a deficiency in vitamin B12 or B9, or by a disease that reduces iron absorption. Be sure to consult your doctorif you suspect you may have anemia.

Iron bisglycinate and pregnancy: do you need to take supplements?

After the first trimester, iron requirements increase to support the growth of the fetus and placenta. However, supplementation is not always necessary: a blood test is required, and the decision rests with your doctor or midwife.

If a course of treatment is recommended, iron bisglycinate is valued here for its digestive tolerance. It is in pregnant women that the 2023 meta-analysis cited above observes the clearest results. Do not start anything on your own initiative.

Can an iron deficiency cause hair loss?

Insufficient iron intake is one of the factors associated with diffuse hair loss, but it is far from the only one, and iron does not make hair grow back.

Only a blood test will tell if your stores are low. If a deficiency is confirmed, correcting your intake helps restore normal levels, with no effect on hair loss caused by hormonal, seasonal, or stress-related factors. If hair loss persists, consult a doctor.
